What FreeOTP+ actually supports
FreeOTP+ is an enhanced community fork of Red Hat’s FreeOTP-Android. It is an Android app, not a cross-platform iOS and Android product. The project currently lists Android 5.0 or newer as its requirement.
Its design is local-first. The app can scan or accept OTP secrets and generate codes without creating a service account. The project adds import/export, modern Android UI, search, categories, faster QR scanning, and optional biometric or PIN protection.

The previous article incorrectly listed iOS support and described unverified encryption-at-rest details. Those claims have been corrected. Android’s device security and the app’s launch lock help protect local access, but exported token data still needs careful handling.
Backup and restore without automatic sync
FreeOTP+ can export and import settings through Android document providers. That is not the same as an end-to-end encrypted sync service. The destination you choose, the file’s protection, and your storage account security determine how exposed the backup may be.
Use a dedicated encrypted container or another trusted encrypted storage layer for exported authenticator data. Keep at least one offline copy, and test import on a spare profile or device before relying on it. Never delete the old vault immediately after creating an untested backup.
Also save service recovery codes separately. If a backup is corrupt or forgotten, those codes are what let you re-enroll 2FA without being locked out.
Daily use and limitations
Search and categories make FreeOTP+ more practical for a large token list than very minimal authenticators. Biometric or PIN launch protection is useful when the phone is already unlocked, while modern QR scanning reduces enrollment friction.
The limitations are equally clear. There is no iPhone app, no desktop client, no web access, and no automatic multi-device synchronization. People who change phones frequently must maintain their own backup routine. Enterprise push approvals and passkeys are separate technologies and are not replaced by a TOTP app.
