Why we exist
When we launched in 2008, most software reviews were either vendor press releases or forum hearsay. We set out to change that – applying the same methodical rigour you would expect from a consumer lab to everyday desktop and mobile software. Every product in our rankings has been tested on real hardware, scored across a fixed rubric, and signed off by at least two reviewers.
Over time our coverage expanded from productivity utilities to privacy tools, AI assistants, audio and video editors, and developer tools. The editorial team has grown, but the rule has not changed: if we cannot test it, we do not rank it.
Our history
2008Founded by S. Hong as a personal blog reviewing Windows productivity software. First post: a 2,000-word breakdown of five PDF editors.
2011Grew to a small editorial team of three. Launched structured scoring rubrics – the same DNA that powers our testing today.
2014Expanded coverage to macOS, mobile apps (iOS and Android), and privacy-focused tools. Readership passed 100,000 monthly visitors.
2017Introduced affiliate revenue to fund hardware purchases. Published our first public Affiliate Disclosure and editorial independence pledge.
2019Rebuilt the testing lab with dedicated benchmark machines. Standardised test environments for each software category.
2022Added AI and LLM tool coverage as a standalone category. Hired two dedicated AI reviewers.
2024Redesigned the site and published full editorial methodology documentation. Team reached six full-time reviewers.
2026Launched continuous re-testing: every top-ranked product is retested at least twice per year as updates ship.

Our values

Independence
Advertisers and affiliate partners have no influence over scores or rankings. We fund testing through affiliate commissions earned after publication – never before.

Transparency
Our scoring rubrics, test environments, and conflict-of-interest policies are published in full. If a reviewer has a connection to a product, it is disclosed.

Accuracy
We correct mistakes promptly. If a product updates and our verdict is no longer accurate, we retest and update the article with a timestamped correction note.

Usefulness
Every article answers one question: which tool should I use, and why? We skip the spec sheets and focus on what matters to real users.

Rigour
Every product goes through a structured test protocol on real hardware. We do not rely on vendor-supplied benchmarks or press kits as a substitute for hands-on testing.

Software changes. We re-test top picks at least twice a year and update rankings when the evidence changes – not on a publishing schedule driven by ad revenue.

A world where every person buying software can find an honest, evidence-based answer in under five minutes – without having to wade through affiliate farms, recycled press releases, or content written by people who have never opened the product.
We measure our progress one review at a time. If a reader tells us our ranking helped them pick the right tool, or avoid a bad one, that is the outcome we are here for.
